Ilkal Sarees, the pride of Karnataka Weaves, have been granted a GI tagging of no 76. These sarees have a rich history dating back to the 7th century when they were first woven under the Chalukya rulers to adorn Goddess Banashankari at Badami, their capital.
Today, Ilkal Sarees are the largest worn across the expanse of Deccan Plateau, employing about 20,000 weavers in North Karnataka and Southern Maharashtra. Traditionally woven in Cotton, Silk, and Art Silk, these sarees were only available in dark tones due to the use of Indigo dye. However, with the changing times and interests of contemporary women, light colors are also gaining prominence.
Ilkal Sarees are now made on Natural and Organic dyed yarns, making them easy to use and maintain. Simply wear, dry in the shade, iron, and wear again. If you wish to wash them, use soapnut or reetha powder for best results.
